The great significance of a label
The iconic wine that was created in the 1960s pays homage this year to its creator, Julio Faustino Martínez, with an exclusive label. The words Legado de Don Julio (Julio’s Legacy) are in recognition of the creator of Faustino I Gran Reserva and the dream that led him to turn Bodegas Faustino into one of the top-ranked Rioja wineries.
Faustino I Gran Reserva was born in 1968. This child of the sixties would soon become one of the most popular Rioja wines in the world, and all thanks to the vision and dedication of the third-generation owner of Bodegas Faustino, Julio Faustino. He made it possible for Faustino I Gran Reserva to be enjoyed in more than 140 countries, with 30 out of every 1,000 bottles of Rioja wine sold in the world now being Faustino I.
Since its creation by Julio Faustino, the vineyards of Oyón and Laguardia have been the starting point for this wine that blends three grape varieties: Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. Julio Faustino’s love of art led him to give his wine a face in the form of a portrait by Rembrandt, and in doing so revolutionised the image of wines. More than half a century later, the label continues to be among the most widely recognised.
For this reason, the best homage that can be given to its creator is through its label. This year, all Faustino I Gran Reserva bottles will have an exclusive design that sets them apart, with a label made from a new, more natural and soft-to-the-touch paper that is a sensory experience in itself.
The details of the new label are subtle but significant. The iconic portrait still features, but in a more balanced way, with a rounded shape and a decorative border. The classic Faustino I capsule is dark green.
The neck label is reminiscent of a cigar band, recalling Julio Faustino’s love of a fine cigar. The label has more elaborate embossing that lends it a neoclassical look. A label in honour of Julio Faustino Martínez, third-generation owner and creator of Faustino I.
A one-of-a-kind opportunity for avid collectors and, naturally, for those who delight in opening a bottle of Faustino I Gran Reserva and toasting the special moments life has in store for us.
